Our Baby Story

You've met the baby, now find out how he got here.

Sunday morning, May 24 a week after the due date, Elisha and I woke up to a phone call telling us it was time to head to the hospital to be induced. By the time we got ready, ate breakfast, walked to the hospital, and checked in it was nearly 11 o'clock. The Pitosin started within a half hour.

The doctor was very hopeful because when we arrived, Elisha was already dilated to a 4. The Pitosin kicked in right away, and the doctor broke her water soon after. Things were going great. Elisha received an epidural which slowed things down, but they were still progressing.

A few hours later she was dilated to a seven. Unfortunately, Harrison's heartbeat was showing a pattern of slowing down with the contractions. This scared the doctor just a bit, so he was slow to increase the Pitosin and the overall process.

By 6 a.m. Elisha was finally dilated to an 8+. It looked like they were planning on the process coming to an end soon, for they had brought in the baby scale and bassinet. I did what I could to prepare for the impending process. Then the nurse came in. She checked Elisha and said that she probably was barely an 8. Another nurse confirmed this, then the doctor came in. He also said that she wasn't as dilated as expected. Apparently, the cervix had swollen.

According to the doctor, instead of pushing past the cervix, Harrison trapped it between his head and the pelvic structures, causing it to swell. The doctor told us we had 2 options at this point: Using a vacuum and trying to force him through, or a C-section.

After Elisha and I talked about it, and the doctor consulted with the on-call high risk guy, everyone decided that the C-section was the best bet. Especially since we didn't know what to expect with the vacuum.

Within 45 minutes, after 20 hours in the hospital, and after causing quite a commotion in the OR, our baby was in my arms. The doctors confirmed that it would've been very bad to do the vacuum thing since they hadn't even seen the big part of his head yet. They were sure that the C-section was his only safe way out.

Elisha is recovering really well. The baby is doing awesome. Almost too awesome, right now his appetite is too big for Elisha to keep up with. They expect that once her milk comes in, that will change. We will be coming home soon.

Thank you all for your support. We love hearing from you all.

What a story. Just to let you know, it is possible to have your next baby without a C-section, thankfully I was able to do that. Don't push yourself to hard during recovery, take the time you need to heal. Again, congratulations.

Wow! sorry to hear that things were so long and ended up being a little complicated. It's nice to have it all over with though I'm sure. Take it easy. We get to go through it all in about 8 hours...AHHH!
